About Lecturio MCAT

Lecturio is a comprehensive resource for those currently in or pursuing medical school that was created in 2008 in Germany. They offer alternative study options for those preparing for the USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2, the MCAT, and the MBBS. They offer the opportunity to learn through video lectures, memorize information with recall questions, reinforce learning with textbook articles, and finally prepare with board-simulated practice questions.

Curriculum is offered in the following categories:

  • Pre-Medical / MCAT
  • Pre-Clinical / USMLE Step 1
  • Clinical / USMLE Step 2
  • MBBS (MBChB)
  • Nursing / NCLEX-RN

Compared to popular MCAT prep companies like Princeton Review and Magoosh, Lecturio is a fraction of the cost with various options of commitment that range from $30 for one month or $14.99/month for a yearly subscription. But is it worth your time? Let’s dive into an in-depth Lecturio review and get down to the bottom of whether you should be using this alongside your MCAT studies.

Curriculum Review

The video lectures are short and get to the point without getting too heavy on details. Nearly all topics are available to view via lecture including Biochemistry, Calculus, Chemistry, Histology, Microbiology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Physics, Psychology and Sociology, and Statistics. Check out our list of classes to take before the MCAT, and you’ll see that Lecturio hits nearly all the classes you should be taking in order to ace the MCAT.

The videos provide plenty of details yet explain everything in a digestible way. Professors teach at 5 of the top 10 global medical schools, so they know a thing or two about what they’re sharing. In these lessons, professors speak slowly and allow for time for any note-taking during the class. Whether this is your first time learning the material or simply a review, this is going to be a good way to brush up on the knowledge and skills necessary for doing well on the MCAT as well as in med school.

Lecturio has over 9,288 recall questions that go with every course and following lectures, so that you can immediately practice and memorize key bits of information that you just learned. After watching a Lecturio lecture, you are directed to read the textbook articles that have been included to reinforce concepts that you just learned. The currently available Qbanks are for pre-clinical / USMLE Step 1 and MBBS. The next available Qbank will be Clinical / USMLE Step 2. I think this is a bummer, as the QBank is one of the main proponents of their platform. Compared to an online course like Princeton Review or Kaplan, Lecturio is not necessarily providing test-specific knowledge but rather supplemental information and lectures that you can use alongside pre-med courses.

Platform

The Lecturio app syncs across all devices and can be accessed while you are offline, allowing you to study even when you don’t have access to Wi-Fi. There are tons of cool features built into the app, one of which is called Bookmatcher. Bookmatcher allows you to scan any medical textbook page and get the relevant videos from Lecturio’s library in a matter of seconds.

For those of you who like to listen to podcasts at 1.5x speed, Lecturio’s player speed adjustments will seem like a godsend. You can adjust the speed of the videos to help make repeating material faster and less time-consuming.

Student Feedback

The lectures are super short and to the point. They make reading the book easier and shorter thus making me happier. I think the most positive outcome I have had since using them (besides doing well) is simply having more time for myself.

Reddit User

I’ve LOVED using this app to prepare to start medical school. It’s straightforward and EXTREMELY well organized, making the topics easily accessible. I can also enjoy some time with Mother Nature camping and spend a few minutes when I have a down second reviewing downloaded material.

iTune App Reviewer

Great comprehensive lectures ranging from mcat prep to Step 2 preparation. I plan on being a customer long after getting into med school.

Who Needs This Course

If you are looking for a specific MCAT prep course, this is not it. However, if you are looking for supplemental studying alongside your pre-med or medical school courses or need some help as you are preparing for the boards, this is a much better option for you and offers comprehensive support for classes you’ll be taking either before or during med school. We like the short, digestible lecture videos, the reinforcing questions following lectures, as well as the textbook articles. The main fallback here is the lack of Qbank options currently for those using Lecturio for MCAT preparation. For a test like the MCAT, practicing on questions is crucial in achieving a high score.
