Anyone who goes into medical school and residency clearly has a deep passion to help others and practice medicine. The reality, however, is that medical school is expensive, and according to the AAMC’s 2017 Education Debt Manager for graduating medical students, the average med student now graduates with over $180,000 in debt. Various forms of aid, including grants, service scholarships and medical student loans are tapped to bridge the gap between medical tuition costs and student resources.
The message here is not to dissuade you from pursuing a career choice that involves student debt, but rather to understand your options on lessening that load. Keep in mind that these scholarships can be quite competitive, making standing apart a must through volunteer hours, a high GPA, and recommendations. So, what kind of medical school scholarships are out there? Let’s learn the basics:

Merit Scholarships
For talented students, merit scholarships can be a great option, as some med schools offer free or reduced rate tuition. These scholarships are primarily based on your GPA throughout high school and your baccalaureate studies as well as scoring highly on the MCAT. In regards to merit scholarships, each med school is different, so students are encouraged to consult with med school advisers at individual campuses for these merit medical school scholarships.

Armed Forces Medical Training Opportunities
Another option for medical school scholarships is through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). Three branches of the military have the HPSP program, including the Army, Navy and Air Force. The HPSP scholarship provides full scholarship with allowance for the medical student including living expenses. After the scholarship, the recipient is required to serve the same number of years in the scholarship.
Service-Oriented Scholarships:
Another medical school scholarship opportunity for students is offered by the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). They offer full scholarships plus monthly living allowance. The scholarship also requires the recipient to have four years of return service in underprivileged communities that needs medical services. Primary care such as family practice, pediatrics and gynecology are field of specialization needed for this kind of scholarship.
Medical Association Scholarships & Minority Scholarships
The list we’re sharing below fall into the category of medical association scholarships and minority scholarships. Medical association scholarships is through associations that offer financial support in the field of medicine, for example, the AMA. Minority scholarships are option to medical students who are historically underrepresented groups in the medical profession.

The AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship seeks to increase communication skills in student scientists. From grant writing to interaction with their community, these skills will benefit a student’s career path and increase public understanding of science and technology.

2. AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability

The AAHD Frederick J. Scholarship Description
The Barnes W. Rose, Jr. and Eva Rose Nickol Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 in memory of Mr. Rose and in honor of Eva. Barnes was a 1951 graduate of Albuquerque High School and a 1957 graduate of West Point. Eva is a longtime New Mexico resident. The fund will award a scholarship to an Albuquerque High School graduate pursuing a bachelor’s degree in one of the STEM majors: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM). 4. AFDO Scholarship Awards

Scholarship Description
In 1981, AFDO established a scholarship fund with the excess funds from the 75th Anniversary of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The “George M. Burditt Scholarship”, the “Betsy B. Woodward Scholarship” and the “Denise C. Rooney” scholarships will be awarded annually to worthy recipients who are in their third year of college.
The recipients should have demonstrated a desire to serve in a career of research, regulatory work, quality control, or teaching in an area related to some aspect of foods, drugs or consumer product safety; should have demonstrated leadership capabilities; and must have at least a 3.0 GPA during the first two years of undergraduate study.

5. Alliance Medical Education Scholarship Fund (AMES)

Scholarship Description
The Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance is an organization of physician spouses and is part of a federation of county medical alliances throughout Pennsylvania. Scholarships are available to current second- and third-year medical students who are Pennsylvania residents enrolled full-time in a Pennsylvania medical school.

The Goodman-Goodell Scholarship is available to full – time second – year medical students from the Portage, Wisconsin, area. 7. ASH HONORS Award (Hematology Opportunities for the Next Generation of Research Scientists)

Scholarship Description:
The HONORS Award is intended for medical students and residents (residents are defined as trainees who have not yet entered a hematology-related training program) in the United States, Canada, or Mexico with an interest in hematology research. The award will provide the recipient with a $5,000 stipend to conduct either a short hematology research project for a maximum of three months, or a longer hematology research project between three and 12 months. The stipend will be distributed in installments, the last of which is dependent upon the receipt of the final report submitted by the recipient. All recipients will also receive $1,000 each year for two years to support attendance at the ASH annual meeting.

The Dr. Marie E. The Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program provides educational programs, leadership training, and funding for outstanding fourth-year medical students for a four-year period. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family medicine. The funding program is designed to reimburse a portion of medical school debt incurred by the student by the conclusion of the required three-year residency. The Foundation is especially interested in students who exhibit the highest levels of skill, compassion, and leadership. A firm and continuing commitment to the specialty of family medicine is an essential precedent for any applicant to receive a Pisacano Scholarship. The scholarship funding is designed to reimburse a portion of medical school debt incurred by the student by the conclusion of the Scholar’s residency in family medicine. A portion of the funds will be distributed to the student during their fourth-year of medical school, and the remaining funds will be distributed over the required three-year residency. The Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) is a group of medical and health care professionals with knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. JMSA offers scholarship funding to medical students who have the potential to contribute to the Japanese-American relationship through the medical field. In choosing scholarship recipients, JMSA also considers students who demonstrate academic excellence and show a strong interest in the Japanese Medical Society of America.
